Renting cars could be easy, not until when you travel out of the states – at the point where it becomes common to get your valid driving license denied by several driving bodies and even corps. But does this happen in the car rental industry?

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about renting a car with an out-of-state license; how possible, how it feels and how to do it.

Can I rent a car with an out of-state license?

You can rent a car with an out-of-state license, however, this is company selective. While there are some car rentals that accept any type of valid licenses, including an out-of-state license, there are also car rental companies that would decline at the sight of it.

Renting a car requires a lot of requirements and procedures, which sum up to 3 basic stages.

This is because it is much of a risky thing for car owners to rent their cars out to someone they have never physically interacted with before.

For this reason, they might want to confirm your authenticity, qualification, financial strength and every related requirements.

The 3 basic stages, as we referred to earlier, includes:

  • Registration
  • Verification
  • Payment

The “Registration” is an easy process that doesn’t require the need for paper documents.

However, for the “Verification” you’ll need to satisfy a load of requirements, which includes meeting up to the legal age, providing a photo of yourself, and having a valid driving license.

Talking about the driving license. How good of a driving license is needed? Can I rent a car with an out-of-state license?

You can rent a car with an out-of-state driving license. However, it all depends on the car rentals which you applied for.

Many car rentals mostly look at the validity of a driver license before approving your application.

If you’ve got a suspended, expired, fake, or you planned on using your friend’s driving license, there’s a high chance your reservation would be declined.

So, as long as the driver’s license is valid, regardless of what country or states it was issued at, it would be accepted.

However, this is not a rule for all, as there could be exclusion.

Previously, we’ve seen cases where car rentals openly require people to provide an in-state driving license before the company is able to rent them a car.

However, in most of the case, this only happens when you decide to go beyond the norm of their payment tradition.

For instance, making payment with cash or debit card. At this point, the company would require other additional verification method, which could include providing an in-state driving license, alongside other requirements.

On the course of this review, we’ve been able to make some research on some car rentals that accept out of state license.

The following types of driver’s licenses are recognized in the United States: any driving license granted by a state, territory, or possession of the United States.

In essence, so long as your driving license is issued by the US, irrespective of the state, it’s going to be accepted provided that it is valid.

Final Thoughts

Most car rentals based in the United States, accepts an out-of-state license, regardless of the state it comes. However, what they are after is the validity.
